I love to set out to find great natural remedies that work! Especially as the spring and summer-time is slowly approaching us, when our feet are hopefully barefoot or in minimalist shoes! It’s not something we think about every day, but just like other parts of our body, our feet do need some special care too!

I know it’s hard sometimes with busy schedules, kids, work, breakfast, lunch & dinner on the table for the family, or whatever your days look like, It can wear a person out! Especially this mama! It’s so easy to go a whole day or month! without taking any time out just to recharge and relax. (I know I’m guilty!) While slipping away for an hour-long soak or fancy pampering shower may not be practical some days, how about a quick stress relieving foot soak care & self-love time from a long day?

Dry feet and cracked heels can be a problem we all have to deal with at times and can be really uncomfortable! This can be helped with regular detoxifying foot soaks or a concentrated salve.

Healing Feet Care:

Here are some of the key herbs in this stress relieving foot soak (and why they’re used):

Lavender – This nervine (a fancy way to say it calms the nerves) helps support the nervous system. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe achy, painful, or swollen feet.

Chamomile – Another relaxing nervine that’s useful for restlessness and irritability. It has anti-inflammatory properties, helps calm muscle spasms, and is a mild pain reliever

Rosemary – This herb is a member of the mint family and has some of the same refreshing qualities. It helps to tone and open veins, stimulate circulation, and calm nerves. It’s also a warming herb as well and the concentrated essential oil is especially good at relieving stiffness and soreness in overworked muscles.

Stress-Melting Magnesium
Most foot soak recipes contain Epsom salts, and for good reason.

Although commonly called Epsom salts, the chemical name is actually magnesium sulfate. Magnesium serves as a tonic for the nervous system and is necessary for many functions throughout the body. Magnesium even helps calm convulsions and spasms.


Cracked Heel Remedy:

  • Exfoliate with a natural pumice stone or foot file
  • Soak in detoxifying food baths or regular detox baths
  • Add ½ cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm foot soak
  • Use magnesium oil on the feet before bed
  • Use a homemade nourishing foot salve (see below) each morning and night
  • Exfoliate feet in the shower with natural foot scrub like my homemade foot scrub

Stress Relieving Foot Soak Recipe:

This recipe makes enough for 4 relaxing foot soaks.


  • 2 TBSP carrier oil of choice (olive or sweet almond both work well)
  • 5 drops rosemary essential oil
  • 2 cups Epsom salt
  • ¼ cup lavender flowers
  • ¼ cup whole chamomile flowers (or 2 TBSP ground)
  • Instructions:
  • In a bowl mix together the liquid carrier oil and rosemary essential oil. Then add the rest of the ingredients and stir well.
  • Store in an airtight glass jar right in the tub or container you plan to use for soaking. I keep it right by my workstation so I remember to use it (when I’m sitting that is!).

How to Use:

Start by filling a container large enough for your feet and fill with very warm water, but not burning hot. Add ½ cup of the bath salt mixture to your foot bath and stir to dissolve.
Soak your feet for about 20 minutes, or until the water becomes cool.

Follow up with this homemade exfoliating foot scrub, some sleepy time foot spray, or salve for cracked heels for extra relaxing and moisturizing benefits!

The rosemary essential oil is most effective at stimulating circulation for tired feet, but if you don’t have the oils or want to skip them, you can just add ¼ cup of dried rosemary leaves at the beginning of the foot soak recipe along with the lavender and chamomile.

DIY Magnesium Foot Scrub Recipe

Epsom salt or magnesium salts would be rough on their own, but the addition of a few other soothing ingredients creates a scrub that is both exfoliating and moisturizing with a cooling sensation to ease dry skin and irritation.

A liquid oil like almond or olive oil moisturizes skin, while the roughness of the magnesium exfoliates. This scrub is naturally unscented, though a variety of essential oils can be added for scent and additional skin benefits.

A pinch of cinnamon powder and a few drops of peppermint essential oil make a festive scrub, or rose petals and lavender oil make a floral version. Some other great combinations would be:

  • 10 drops lavender essential oil and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 10 drops citrus essential oil and 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil and 5 drops rosemary essential oil
  • If you don’t want a salt/magnesium based scrub or are getting magnesium from other sources, sugar can also be used in place of the salt to make a simple sugar scrub with many custom options for scent and color.

Magnesium Foot Scrub Ingredients

  • 1 cup of epsom salt (a natural source of magnesium), magnesium flakes, or arm & hammer pure baking soda
  • 1/4 cup olive oil or almond oil
  • 1 teaspoon liquid castile soap
  • Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oil of choice (I used peppermint)

Simple Foot Scrub

In a small bowl, mix all ingredients and add essential oils or scents until desired scent is achieved.
Store in an airtight jar and use a teaspoon sized amount to exfoliate feet or body as needed. Rinse off after use.

I love to mix and try out different scents and organic oils for my foot scrubs, for example peppermint, lavender, and even turmeric powder can be added as well to make the scrub more of an orange color.

Ingredients and Steps to make your foot scrub

  • 1 measuring cup of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
  • 1 cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil or Olive oil
  • 10 drops of Essential Oils
  • Teaspoon of water if needed for consistency
  • I personally like to add a sprinkle of cinnamon on top but not necessary

This recipe should be enough for one jar, if you want to make more just double the ingredients as needed.

Mix all the ingredients together until thoroughly mixed, then scoop out unto your jar of choice.
